United States sources told NBC News and other news agencies that Israel had carried out a strike on Iran. There are reports of explosions in the Iranian city of Isfahan.
The state media of Iran reported that air defense batteries had been fired in several provinces, including near a major military base in Isfahan.
It follows an Iranian attack on Israel over the weekend in response to a strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
