In his book Spirit Possession in Judaism: Cases and Context from the Middle Ages to the Present, Matt Goldish, defined spirit possession and its types:

A spirit possession is a phenomenon in which a person (or those close to a person) believe that an alien spirit, either a ghost of a dead human or a disembodied spirit of another type, has entered the person and controls or influences some or all of the person’s actions and thoughts, while the person’s own spirit or soul is partially or fully dormant.

Anthropologists have identified two broad categories of spirit possession: executive possession, and pathogenic possession. In this case, the executive possession involves the transformation or replacement of identity, while pathogenic possession is associated with illness and misfortune caused by possessing spirits.

The concept of spirit possession

The concept of spirit possession is cross-cultural and has been observed in many societies around the world. The belief in spirit possession is often linked to religious or spiritual practices, and is sometimes used as a form of healing or therapy.

Recent advances in cognitive psychology have helped explain some of the recurrent features of spirit possession. These features can be attributed to distinct processes of human psychology, such as the representation of person-identity and notions about contamination.

In conclusion, spirit possession is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that has been studied by many disciplines. While it is true that spirit possession is often associated with religious or spiritual practices, it can also be viewed as a form of therapy or healing.

Spirit possession should be understood in terms of its situation and the context of the message that it sends whether it is in the form of executive possession or by pathogenic possession.
