And it shall come to pass, when the LORD thy God hath brought thee in unto the land whither thou goest to possess it, that thou shalt put the blessing upon mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Ebal.” —Deuteronomy 11:29, KJV

Researchers for the first time found the oldest known Hebrew inscription which contains the word “curse” ten (10) times in a 23-word English translation.

Biblically, Moses instructs the Levites to lead all of God’s people, the Israelites, from the top of Mount Ebal in a series of eleven (11) curses against anyone who partakes in a variety of actions such as making an idol which is a form of idolatry, dishonoring their parents, or moving their neighbor’s boundary stone. These evil acts violates the precepts and rules of the Torah. (Deuteronomy 27:15-26) Also, Joshua, one of Moses’ successor who leads the people of Israel out of the wilderness into the Promised Land, builds an altar on Mount Ebal following with his battle Ai, makes a burnt offering to God, and repeats the curses of Moses. — Joshua 8:30

Recently, the team of the Associates for Biblical Research (ABR) held a press conference last March 24 at the Lanier Theological Library in Houston, Texas, U.S.A, and announced the discovery of a formulaic curse inscription recovered on a small folded lead tablet found on Mount Ebal.

The researchers described what contains in the Hebrew inscription: the word “curse” (which is the Hebrew equivalent of קלָלָה ,”qelalah”), appears ten (10) times and the word “YHVH” (the Hebrew sacred name of God, יהוה) appears twice, ABR said in their press announcement:

“Cursed, cursed, cursed—cursed by the God YHWH [Jehovah], you will die cursed, cursed you will surely die, cursed by YHWH [Jehovah] cursed, cursed, cursed.”
